The Vision

The Digital Fiat Currency Institute promotes the study, development, standardization, specification, promotion, and adoption of digital fiat currency (DFC) for the betterment of all people, regardless of their geo-socio-economic status, under the auspices and governance of a central bank, as an economically beneficial use and means of currency, without prejudice or discrimination.

“Digital fiat currency, authorized and issued by a country’s Central Bank, has great potential to offer a secure, interoperable payment instrument suited to our increasingly digital world…We see great value to be unlocked as well as significant potential for disruption. ”

— Bilel Jamoussi, Chief of the ITU-T Study Groups Department

Our History

Established in 2017, DFCI is a registered 501(C)(6) Trade Association. It aims to fill a global knowledge gap in understanding technical and regulatory implications of the future of currency by building an ecosystem of stakeholders from public- private- and social sectors. DFCI members contribute to the study and practical implementations of digital fiat currencies. DFCI supports the standards setting work by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Focus Group on Digital Fiat Currency and is the founding member of the Initiative: Digital Fiat Currency: The Future of Currency (iDFC) which is aimed at creating educational programs and laboratories to promote the DFC ecosystems and DFC adoption around the world.
